Testing Prior to Return
Under current government Covid-19 restrictions, you must have proof of a negative Covid-19 test to travel to England even if you are a UK citizen or if you have already had the Covid-19 vaccine. The test must be taken in the 3 days leading up to the service on which you will arrive in England departs.
According to Gov.uk, your test result can be provided as either a printed document or as an email or text message shown on a phone.
If you do not have this proof of a negative test result, you will likely not be able to board your flight or mode of transport to England. If you manage to arrive in England without proof that you have had a negative Covid-19 test in the last 3 days, you could be fined up to £500.
When deciding where to have your test done, you can chose either the place in which you start your journey or in another country which is on your way to England if you are travelling though another country. If you take your Covid-19 test in the UK ahead of a return journey of less than 3 days, you will be unable to use a National Health Service (NHS) test and must therefore use a private provider.
Self-Isolation on Arrival
Following current government rules, even if you provide a negative test for entering England on arrival, you must still follow the government rules for self-isolating when you arrive and currently, all travel corridors have been suspended.
Gov.uk states that when you arrive in the UK, will need to self-isolate for 10 days, regardless of the outcome of your test result pre-departure. This self-isolation period can be shortened, however, if you pay for a ‘Test-To-Release’ Covid-19 test upon arrival with negative results.
This scheme for reduced self-isolation is not available however for those who have been through any country that is subject to a travel ban in the 10 days before arrival in England.
Test Assurance Group currently have a testing facility at Liverpool John Lennon Airport which provides PCR testing and rapid testing for ‘Fit-To-Fly’ and ‘Test-To-Release’ certificates.
