On 7th May 2021, the government Global Travel Taskforce announced the countries that are no on the ‘green list’ for travel from the UK. The UK government confirmed that international travel can gradually resume from the 17th May, with 12 countries and territories being added to the ‘green list’.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps explained that although the travel ban is being lifted, strict rules on testing and quarantine will remain in place in order to protect public health and the UK’s mass vaccination programme. He also stated that people should not travel to ‘amber’ and ‘red’ countries for leisure.
The ‘green list’ is a guide of places that the public can visit safely without needing to quarantine on return to England.
The Green List
Portugal (inclusive Azores & Madeira)
South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands
St Helena, Ascension & Tristan du Cunha
If you are going to travel to a country on the ‘green list’, you will still need to take a pre-departure Covid test up to 72 hours before your return travel, and a single PCR test on or before day 2 of your arrival back into England. These tests can only be booked and paid for through private suppliers, such as Test Assurance Group (TAG).
When travelling from any ‘red list’ countries, a 10-day managed hotel quarantine is still required and quarantine at home alongside stringent testing is requires for those returning from ‘amber list’ destinations.
The government has announced that these lists will be reviewed every 3 weeks using information from public health advice, including the Joint Biosecurity Centre’s assessment of the latest data.
Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, said “Today marks the first step in our cautious return to international travel, with measures designed above all else to protect public health and ensure we don’t throw away the hard-fought gains we’ve all strived to earn this year.
“This is a new way of doing things, and people should expect travel to be different this summer – with longer checks at the borders, as part of tough measures to prevent new strains of the virus entering the country and putting our fantastic vaccine rollout at risk.”
Test Assurance Group provide specialist Covid-19 testing, and currently have testing sites at Liverpool John Lennon Airport and in Wilmslow, Cheshire, providing the gold standard of testing with quick and reliable results.
